Ventnor to honour master shoemaker Kevin Garlick with memorial unveiling

Friends, customers and colleagues of the late craftsman shoemaker, Kevin Garlick, are invited to gather for the unveiling of a memorial in his honour at Spring Hill Gardens, Ventnor on Tuesday, 26th November at 11am.

Following the ceremony, all are welcome to enjoy a buffet at the Better Days Cafe, where memories of Kevin’s life and work can be shared. Organisers have expressed their hopes for a good turnout to celebrate his remarkable legacy.

Local support
The collection for Kevin’s memorial was spearheaded by Andy and Steve from Occasions and Ventnor Post Office. Appreciation has been expressed to all those who contributed.

Kevin often used to have his lunch or just sit and sew a boot whilst enjoying a cup of coffee in the Better Days Cafe, making it the perfect place to remember him in.

Remembering Kevin Garlick’s unique craftsmanship
Kevin, who passed away on 12th February 2024, was a master shoemaker with a reputation that extended far beyond the Isle of Wight. His shop, One Step Beyond, located on Ventnor’s High Street, was a treasure trove of craftsmanship and history.

Visitors who peered into the shop often mistook it for abandoned due to its dark façade and cluttered interior. Inside, however, it was a hive of creativity, with workbenches piled high with leather offcuts, half-finished boots, and vintage machinery. This apparent chaos belied the extraordinary skill and dedication that Kevin brought to his craft.

A shoemaker to the world
Kevin was no ordinary shoemaker. His creations, specialising in period and vintage footwear, earned him worldwide acclaim. Museums, stage productions and period films and television productions sought out his expertise to ensure historical accuracy and quality.

Kevin also became an integral figure in the historical re-enactment community, crafting bespoke footwear for enthusiasts across the globe. His work not only brought history to life, but also left a lasting impression on those who wore his shoes or admired his artistry.

A fitting tribute
The unveiling of the memorial offers a moment to reflect on Kevin’s life, his contributions to his craft, and the impact he had on his local community and beyond.

The gathering at Spring Hill Gardens and the buffet that follows promise to be fitting tributes to a man whose work and spirit left a lasting impression on Ventnor and the wider world.
