Something to keep an eye (or ear) out for, this in from the Police, in their own words. Ed
Police are warning businesses in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight of bogus companies offering advertising space in Hampshire Constabulary publications.
The force has received a number of reports from members of the public who have received unsolicited calls from companies claiming to be selling advertising space in police publications, calendars and diaries.
Businesses received invoices
Despite refusing the offer, some business owners have then received invoices demanding hundreds or thousands of pounds for adverts they had not approved and had yet to see.
Hampshire Constabulary would like to clarify that it does not seek advertising revenue through cold calling. It commissions a single company, Media 3, to sell advertising within the force magazine, Frontline.
Hampshire Police Federation produces diaries and calendars which are sponsored, and the federation never cold-calls.
Don’t respond to third party agencies
Businesses and individuals wanting to target an audience through public sector publications like Frontline are advised to approach the publication directly, and not to respond to approaches from third party agencies.
Never agree to buy goods or services as a result of an unsolicited call.
If you are suspicious of any caller who is attempting to sell over the phone, get in touch with Hampshire County Council Trading Standards (details below).
We would also urge potential buyers under these circumstances not to part with the full fee up front.
Hampshire County Council Trading Standards has been informed of the matter.
If you think you have become a victim of a scam, report the matter to Trading Standards via Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.
