After the all-singing, all-dancing corporate roadshow that accompanies the official London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay has left the Island tomorrow afternoon, a series of runners will be following in their footsteps (but without the free gifts and media truck).
There will be three runners on the Isle of Wight this Sunday completing the run between Yarmouth and East Cowes as part of the Endurancelife Real Relay. It’s an exciting attempt to follow the entire route of the official Olympic Torch around the British Isles in one continuous non-stop journey.
Involving hundreds of runners from across the British Isles, the 8,000 mile mission sees those taking part running day and night to reach London in time for the Olympic Games opening ceremony.
The Isle of Wight runners
Chris Neil, who will be running from Yarmouth to Freshwater Bay from 3pm on Sunday, said “It is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I don’t want to miss it!”
At 16.40, he’ll be passing the baton to Keith Harris at Freshwater Bay, who’ll be running the distance to Carisbrooke.
Keith said, “It will be great to be part of the Real Relay and to raise some much needed cash for a good cause. Great to see runners all over the country coming together.”
Once he arrives at Carisbrooke, he’ll hand over to James Morris at 18.20 who’ll be completing the last leg of the IW Relay to East Cowes.
James said, “Great to be part of an event that truly exemplifies the Olympic Spirit.”
Best of luck to all the runners taking part, we hope that you’ll have spectators cheering you on during the day.
Thanks to Barry Ecuyer for the heads-up.
