If you follow Isle of Wight band Wet Leg on social media, you’ll have seen that they have just released two new singles as part of Spotify Singles.

The Spotify Singles programme was created to provide artists with the opportunity to re-record one of their existing songs in a fresh new way, as well as cover a song of their choice by one of their own musical heroes.

Working with James Ford
Taking a short break from touring, the band have been in the recording studio with James Ford – who has worked with the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Kylie Minogue, Florence and the Machine, Depeche Mode and Gorillaz – to record a cover of Ashnikko’s Daisy as well as a reworking of album track, Convincing (listen to both below).

Track has “gone through a little shapeshift over time”
Convincing is the only track released by Wet Leg that has Hester Chambers on lead vocals.

Having followed Hester’s musical career over the last 10+ years, it’s great to see this track reworked and given the chance for more attention. We love the new version.

Hester explains,

“Most of our album was written in the depths of 2020, and right up to April 2021 when we went into the studio.

“Since live music has opened back up, we play some tracks just as they were recorded, but Convincing is one of the songs that has gone through a little shapeshift over time as we’ve been playing gigs for the last year.

“This version we recorded with James leans into the more mellow and woozy world it exists in our live sets.”

Chambers: Another little circle coming round in our Wet Leg world
Daisy was the song that soundtracked Hester and Rhian’s early dip into songwriting together when Rhian was living in Hackney, East London.

Hester reflects,

“I remember going to stay with Rhian around the time we recorded Chaise Longue with Jon McMullen [another Islander] and she had told me about this artist she’d been listening to loads.

“She sang and played Daisy on the guitar in the morning while we had coffee. It feels like another little circle coming round in our Wet Leg world, getting to make this cover.”

Radio 1 Live Lounge
If you missed it, on the day of when the Mercury Awards (which the Wet Leg album has been nominated for) were supposed to take place (also the day of the death of the Queen) the band were in session for BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge performing Wet Dream as well as Steve Lacy’s Bad Habit.

You can watch the performances below and listen to the session (which has Rhian and Hester chatting with the hosts).

Brutal touring schedule
The band’s touring schedule has been brutal, with very little time off between travelling and performing.

They recently had to cancel a handful of dates in order to take a step back and recharge their batteries, as well as look after their mental health.

Rhian told News OnTheWight that they have a couple of weeks break coming up soon, but the earliest we can see that is mid-December. Let’s hope they do get a proper break and are not just stuck in the studio recording a second album.
