What Isle of Wight councillors declared on their register of interests

Freemason lodges, the Campaign for Real Ale, Unite and Cowes Harbour Commission are among the myriad organisations listed on Isle of Wight councillors’ register of interests.

Why councillors must declare their interests
County Hall’s elected representatives have to register interests so the public, local authority employees and fellow councillors know which of their interests might give rise to a conflict of interest.

The Nolan Principles explained
Under integrity, one of the seven Nolan Principles of public life, holders of public office must avoid placing themselves under any obligations to people or organisations that might try inappropriately to influence them in their work.

As part of this principle, they must disclose and resolve any interests and relationships.
