World Aids Day event at Quay Arts today

A World Aids Day event is taking place at Quay Arts, Newport, later today (Thursday).

The networking event, from 1.30pm until 4pm, is an opportunity to commemorate those who have died from an AIDS-related illness and to support people living with HIV.

People can meet representatives from organisations that support the Island’s LGBTQ+ community including Isle of Wight Pride, Breakout Youth, the sexual health service and volunteers from Out On An Island. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Love: It must be our ambition for people to be respected and cared for equally
Cllr Karl Love, Cabinet member for Public Health, said,

“World Aids Day is a special day for David and I.

“Today, we remember the passing of our Island friends in quite tragic circumstances from HIV in the 1990s. We also think of friends living with HIV and the battle they personally have and carry with great dignity and hope.

“Many people still conceal their HIV status from others for fear of discrimination and hatred. I understand their suffering. While there is not yet a vaccine, there are ways to reduce the risk of catching HIV through pre-exposure prophylaxis and safer sexual practices. There are also now excellent treatments to prevent the illness progressing.

“Sadly, we can see how oppressive behaviour still exists in other parts of the world. It must be our ambition for equality, for people to be respected and cared for equally.”

“Passionate, caring and confidential sexual health service
Cllr Love also paid tribute to the Island’s “passionate, caring and confidential” sexual health service, thanking staff for their dedication and for “helping us all to love safely and live fulfilled lives”.

Each year in the UK more than 4,000 people are diagnosed with HIV, so, if you are concerned, please book to attend the clinic at St Mary’s to speak to an advisor.
