The Isle of Wight Council has launched a consultation on a new policy aimed at regulating the placing of objects on pavements and highways. Items such A-frame style advertising boards, tables and chairs, parasols, planters and patio heaters will fall within the scope of this new policy.

Avoiding over-cluttering
The policy aims to ensure streets on the Island do not become overly cluttered with objects that can cause a hazard to people with reduced visibility, wheelchairs or mobility scooters.

It will also allow the council to review the types of objects before they are placed and includes limits on the size of advertising boards.

Extending the policy
The council already charges businesses to place tables and chairs outside their property, and it is proposed that policy is extended to include a fee for the siting of an advertising board or other objects on the highway.

Councillor Paul Fuller, Executive member for planning and licensing, said:

“This policy gives the council greater control over what items are placed on our streets. Recently we have seen an increase in businesses placing advertising boards on our streets and these can cause a hazard.

“I would encourage business owners and residents to send in their views during the consultation so these can be taken into consideration in the final policy which will subsequently go to members for approval.”

The consultation is available on the council website and runs until 16 January 2015. Further information can be obtained from the council’s licensing department by contacting (01983) 823159.
