Homeless man:

Night shelter for the homeless to open during cold snap

This in from the council, in their own words. Ed

The Isle of Wight Council is working with the Church of Victorious Life to provide an overnight shelter during periods of cold weather for those unfortunate enough to be homeless and living on the streets.

As well as providing a bed for the night, volunteers from the church will provide free hot food and drinks along with bathing and laundry facilities.

Centre opens tonight
With sub-zero temperatures forecast this week, the centre will open its doors at 7pm tonight (Monday 10 December) and stay open overnight until 8am each morning until the cold snap is over.

The night shelter, located at Downside Community and Learning Centre at Furrlongs Road in Newport, is open to anyone who would otherwise be spending the night on the street.

Support from housing officers
Housing officers from the council will be supporting volunteers and be on hand should those using the shelter have any questions.

Anyone wanting more information about housing support should contact the housing team based at County Hall or in an emergency out of hours, call Wightcare on (01983) 821105.
