Andy Hicks

Lone sculler at final regatta for Ryde Rowing Club

Thanks to Steve for this latest report from the Ryde Rowing Club. Ed

Ryde Rowing Club suffered a bit of a nightmare during their preparations to travel to the last Hants & Dorset ARA Regatta of the season at Western Shore, Southampton and hosted by the BTC Rowing Club on Saturday (9th September).

After leaving the movement of their boat trailer to Club sponsors Wighlink Fishbourne Car Ferry terminal until late in the evening, ready for pick-up in the morning, because of high levels of traffic, the Club Minibus and towing vehicle broke down leaving the Club stranded and with no choice but to cancel the trip.

So the only Ryde Competitor at the Regatta was Novice Sculler Andy Hicks – who travelled independently and was able to borrow a boat for his event – where he qualified for the final where he finished in fifth place.

Fortunately the Club’s Men’s Junior Senior Four have already secured the Hants & Dorset Championship and were duly confirmed as Champions and selected to represent the Association at the South Coast Championships Regatta, to be held in Swanage, in September at the Council Meeting after the Regatta. This will be the 37th time a Ryde Crew has been selected to represent the Association.

However with a number of crews unable to compete it was a disappointing finish to Ryde’s Hants & Dorset ARA Regatta campaign.
