Hammerhead crane

Hammerhead crane repairs now underway

This in from the council, in their own words, Ed

The crane is on Historic England’s ‘at risk’ register and the organisation has provided a £76,000 grant to enable the council to begin the repairs.

Works involve repairing the badly corroded sections of steel and rivets from the crane’s tower and painting the repairs help preserve them.

Councillor Ian Stephens, Executive member for tourism, culture and heritage, said:

“It is very pleasing works have now got underway to preserve the future of what is a very important piece of the Island’s history.

“I want to thank Historic England for providing funds to cover the repairs, without which the works could not happen.”

It is estimated the works will be completed by the end of the year.
