Pupils raise money to build and donate life saving floats

Thanks to Nat for this latest news from Ryde Academy. Ed

Ryde Academy held a non-uniform day to help raise funds for Seaflex’s campaign to build and donate life saving floats.

Seaflex is an Island business who have developed special floats to be used to facilitate large scale rescue at sea.

A worthwhile cause
This was in response to the humanitarian crisis taking place in the Mediterranean and they have already been used to prevent people from drowning. Many of the boats used to cross the sea are not seaworthy and are so overcrowded that listing occurs even in calm waters.

Raising money for something that can save the lives of adults and children in a matter of minutes is a very worthwhile cause.

Competitive spirit
Students were able to wear their House colours and each of the Houses also organised fundraising events.

There was a Dodgeball tournament and a Penalty Shootout during break and lunch time. Students also set up a sweet stall and a biscuit stall and organised a ‘guess the number of sweets’ in the tub competition.

At break and lunch time students could also pay a donation to have their photo taken in a specially designed photo booth made by the art department.

Having fun whilst raising money
The Principal, Mrs Ballard, said

“We have had such a busy half term, establishing and embedding new systems to improve the Academy, it was fantastic to see both students and staff having fun whilst raising money for such a good cause.”

The parent of one of our Year 8 students sent in a donation of £24, which she had raised at work, when she heard what the Academy was doing.

The total amount of money raised was £880.36. The totals raised by each of the Houses was as follows;

Monarch £241.98
Brimstone £220.28
Admiral £259.23
Emperor £158.87
