IW Radio are this morning reporting that around 20 jobs in the Isle of Wight council’s Communications and Performance Departments could be scrapped as the impact of the spending review starts to spread across the public body.
At last night’s Ventnor Botanic Garden public meeting (report to follow today), Cllr George Brown explained that a total of £32m needs to shaved from the council’s budget over the next four years, with £17m disappearing in 2011. Job losses across the council were inevitable, he said.
Council Chief Executive, Steve Beynon, told the radio station that the communications and performance departments are currently undergoing a restructure and that staff are in the process of being consulted.
We’re sure that the Performance Department (whatever that is) and Communications Department, which covers not only press, but also events, marketing and tourism, won’t be the only part of the council affected by the looming job cuts.
Our thoughts go out to all those at risk of losing their jobs in this difficult financial time.
