Ventnor Winter Gardens: Deadline For Bids Today

Today sees the deadline for bids to take on the leasehold or freehold of the Ventnor Winter Gardens.

Winter GardensAt January’s Ventnor Town Council meeting, John Metcalfe, the Deputy Director for Economy and Tourism, told the meeting that they (IWC) would widely market the tender process as they were “keen to advertise the building”, stating that they didn’t want a “narrow tender process”.

How “keen to advertise the building”?
If you’re wondering what that means, the council press office tell us that apart from on the council Website, the tender was advertised in the County Press and with Leisure Opportunities Magazine (and put on the LOM Website).

We let the council know that we’d be happy for them to advertise it on VentnorBlog, thinking that our great search result ranking and extensive readership would be just the sort of thing they’d jump at. They declined.

John Metcalfe said at the January meeting (prior to advertising) that they’d already received five expressions of interest. We also know of at least two groups who have been working hard to put together business plans and proposals.

Delegated decision on preferred bidder
Cabinet member for Economy, Tourism, Leisure, Planning and Property, Cllr George Brown, will be making a delegated decision by the end of May as to who the preferred bidder is.

If you’re wondering what sort of terms are on offer, we thought that you’d like to be in the loop and have the ability to check out the documents sent out to the interested parties. We’ve put them below.

Best of luck to all who put their bids in to the council, we look forward to seeing the venue open again very soon.

It’s amazing how this Government can find £900,000 for each cruise missile that is fired in Libya although are unable to find the money to fund public services and places of enjoyment like the Winter Gardens.

Sadly not also amazing that our council say privatisation is good value for money, and that instead of jumping at the chance you gave them they give the impression of wanting to jump on you.

I don’t see how you can possibly compare the invaluable service provided by blowing up the wrong kind of people (i.e. those with different colour skin) with the silly fanciful luxuries like hospitals, educational facilities and public transport… Whilst we all accept the need for (pointless yet dangerous) savage cuts, we can’t just go around letting people we don’t agree with live now, can we? Imagine where… Read more »

Do we expect anything different from governments who do what they want? I gasp when I think that we are walking into another Iraq situation. They harp on about this deficit caused by the banks and yet they are squandering resources on more war. Those that have said the cuts are unnecessary were right. There is a march being planned in London this Saturday against cuts and asking for an… Read more »

Poor old Ventnor…CP reports a 300,000 makeover for County Hall, but they can’t afford a lifeguard hut on Ventnor’s beach, nevermind the lifeguards-wonder what they really want for the Winter Gardens- I think it’s about time the Isle of Wight has some sort of an uprising…what is this County Council doing and getting away with it…collecting obscene amount of salaries whilst taking away more and more of… Read more »

I totally agree Bes, but it’s not £300,000. They are planning to spend £4,000,000 on County Hall.

It’s an outrageous suggestion when they can’t give a few hundred thousand to keep people safe on beaches.

Not to mention the loss of job opportunities for trained beach lifeguards, I expect they’ll all leave the Island and head for somewhere else.

After they have spent 4m doing the place up,they will announce it has “Concrete Cancer” is not fit for purpose and wish they had kept hold of the good old victorian places.

They would prefer to knock it down and build a car park. Benyon and Pugh couldn’t care a less about the beautiful old buildings on the island and no doubt have future plans to destroy many others.

Ventnor is a unique and beautiful Victorian town that has even survived bombing in the 2nd World War and I find it really sad to see it’s history and beauty being ruined by idiots like Pugh and Benyon. Their plans for modernisation are causing even more damage than Hitler did when he sent the German bombers over Ventnor to destroy the Radar Station.

So saddened at what is going on here on the Island, our country and the rest of the world, quakes, wars etc, do not know what to say,it just seems to get worse and worse, and of course the budget today, more bad news I suppose. But hey!
the sun is shining, so lets smile.
