Good news for the residents of Ventnor as they are added to the latest phase of roll-out programme from BT for improved speed broadband. This in from BT via the council press office. Ed
BT announced yesterday that another 4,000 Isle of Wight homes and businesses will have access to faster broadband by the Summer of next year.
Ventnor is among 63 South East communities included in the latest roll-out plans for BT’s next generation broadband service delivered over copper lines.
The BT investment makes available broadband speeds of up to 20 megabits per second (Mbps) – more than double the maximum speeds previously available to the majority of UK homes and businesses.
Open to all companies providing broadband
The new next generation broadband network is available on an open, wholesale basis to all companies providing broadband services.
This investment is in addition to the £2.5 billion BT roll-out of super-fast fibre-based broadband, which is expected to bring even faster speeds to two-thirds of UK premises by the end of 2014.
We hope it’s extended to Sandown Bay
Cllr David Pugh, Leader, Isle of Wight Council said: “We very much welcome this latest announcement from BT which will enable residents and businesses in another key town on the Island to benefit from faster broadband.
“In an increasingly competitive and technological world it is essential that local businesses and households have access to high-speed sophisticated communications.
“Our own proposed investment of £3 million will also see these benefits being extended across rural areas, as part of our commitment to securing economic development and growth for the whole Island. We very much hope that BT will continue to extend its investment to include other key conurbations such as the Sandown Bay area – a business and residential community central to our tourism trade and one that would also benefit from access to faster broadband.”
