Body of man found beneath Culver Cliff

A man’s body has been found on rocks beneath Culver Cliff near Bembridge on the Isle of Wight this afternoon (Saturday, July 13).

At 3.50pm today, members of the public who were off-shore in a dinghy called the Coastguard and reported seeing the body of a man at the base of the cliff.

Police officers including the Marine Unit are in attendance alongside ambulance crews. The HM Coastguard helicopter has also attended the scene.

Area sealed off
The cliffs and area below have been sealed off whilst the incident is dealt with and the body recovered.

At this time we do not know the identity of the deceased, and we are focussing on establishing his identity and the circumstances of this incident.

A post mortem examination will be conducted in due course.

Once we have identified the deceased and notified next-of-kin, we will be able to provide a further update.

Officers will remain at the scene to conduct their investigation and are very keen to speak to anyone who may have seen a man in the fenced area near the edge of the cliff today or has any information which can help them establish what happened.

Witnesses or anyone with information is urged to call Hampshire Constabulary on 101, and ask for Newport CID.
