Wootton Bridge from the east

When does Immediately not mean Immediately? In the confusing world of Island Roads

Following the emergency notice issued by Island Roads this afternoon highlighting traffic restrictions on Wootton Bridge, an update has just been issued.

The previous notice received at 4.38pm had declared that from precisely 3.30pm today (15th July) two restrictions would be in place on Wootton Bridge, namely an 18-tonne weight restriction and 20 mph speed restriction.

Start date unknown?
However, an hour and a half later, the following notice was issued by Island Roads,

Emergency Traffic Notices temporary 20 speed limit and 18 Tonne Weight Restriction at Wootton, Isle of Wight.

Please note – the emergency notices issued in respect of Wootton Bridge have been issued to allow us to respond promptly, when these have been signed by the council, to effect necessary weight restrictions and speed limits on Wootton Bridge, following further indications of the structural weakening of the bridge.

Whilst these notices indicate an immediate notice of restrictions, in reality these will not come into force until all of the necessary consultation with organisations and communities has been completed and works to install the necessary signage for diversion routes are in place.

We apologise if this was not clear in our communications and will continue to keep you informed, in good time, of when these arrangements will come into force.
