Isle of Wight council’s September meeting cancelled

It’s been confirmed the September full council meeting will be cancelled.

As reported earlier in the week, the Chairman proposed the cancellation due to lack of ‘formal business’.

Cllr Whitehouse had suggsted he might be considering putting forward a motion for a vote of no confidence in the “Labour-led Independent administration”, but this will now have to wait.

Other motions postponed
Two motions tabled by Geoff Lumley will also have to wait until the October meeting, which, due to the heavy agenda, will now commence at 5pm.

Cllr Lumley said at least one of his motions would “be lost in the very heavy October agenda” (Devolution will also be on that agenda).

He went on to say,

“Full Council is the only place where Executive Members are properly held to account. Yes, we can ask questions at Executive, but that is at the discretion of the Leader (who is always very grumpy at getting too many) and it is rare that I have more than a couple of colleagues to accompany me at my regular attendances. Full Council is when we at least see some councillors who I would barely recognise otherwise!”

Of the 17 councillors who openly responded to the consultation, Cllr Lumley and Cllr Barry were the only two who openly opposed the cancellation.
