Thursday next week (2nd April) sees the first screening of all five short films about artists created by local film maker, David George at Quay Arts in Newport.
Janice Thwaites is just one of the artists featured and is someone who will be well known to many on the Island already.
David’s film aims to give an insight into Janice’s inspiration and motivation for her work and having seen a short clip already, we believe that he’s managed to capture this wonderfully.
Janice Thwaites may be known to some as the previous director of the Model Village in Godshill, but after she left that role, she went on to gain an MA in fine art at the University of Southampton.
Her previous training at Winchester Uni back in the early 90s set her up in good stead for the many exhibitions she has held since that date on and off the Island.
One of her recent exhibitions was the “Still Life” installation held in the Rope Store at Quay Arts last year.
As some of you will already know, the Quay Arts building was saved many years ago by funding from The Quakers, who still use the Rope Store Gallery for their Sunday morning meeting place.
Janice says that her work that exhibited there near the beginning of last year was “about hiding and concealing, revealing and exposing. It is also about places to pray. The aim was to install “Still Life” duvets into this space, taking the project full circle, back to its inception.”
Janice’s talents are not confined to installations and she is able to easily convey her messages through painting.
One of our favourite pieces of hers is ‘Netted’ (shown left). So much can be read into this hauntingly beautiful painting and we look forward to being able to ask the artist herself about it next Thursday after the film screenings at Quay Arts.
All the artists will be available after the films are shown to answer questions for this free event.
Do make an effort to go along, it should be a wonderful treat for anyone who loves art and the Island.
