Kev Chant at Goodwood by Julie Cooper

A well-earned first place for Wightlink-Wight Mountain cycle team rider

A superb team effort last Tuesday resulted in four of the Wightlink-Wight Mountain riders finishing in the top ten in the second round of the Southdown Velo Series at Goodwood.

After a steady start in the E/1/2 race, Joe Staunton got in a break with two other riders and managed to stay away for several laps before the bunch got organised and began to chase them down.

The stronger riders pulled away and with the pace proving to be a bit too hot, Joe dropped back to the peloton.

A well-earned first place
Kev Chant (pictured) jumped on the wheel of another rider who then put in an attack, and they managed to bridge the gap to the leaders with four laps to go.

Kev showed his class in the final lap and powered home winning the sprint to the line, taking a well-earned first place.

Finishing strong
Matt Allsopp and Stuart Waite finished strong in the bunch sprint, taking eighth and ninth places, with Joe Staunton close behind.

Third cat race
In the third cat race, Jerry Cooper, Charlie Orchard and James Veal worked well together.

James, who was active in several breaks, was the best placed on the night sprinting home to take seventh place with Charlie and Jerry finishing in the bunch.
