If passed, the Data Retention and Investigatory Powers Bill (DRIP for short), means that everything that you do on the Internet or on your mobile will be recorded, directly connected to you and kept for a year.
The fear
The fear is that all of your private communications including Facebook messages, private photos, Snapchats, Skype video calls, phone calls, Facetime calls, as well as every Website you visit – all directly linked to you.
This won’t just target people who are breaking the law, but includes single person in the UK.
Many concerned
A wide range of people are concerned about this (although you wouldn’t have guessed it today, as the media just spoke about the government reshuffle).
Articles expressing concerns at the speed and the breadth of what’s being proposed have appeared from
groups who are attempting to protect the general public’s freedom online and in publications including the FT and Daily Mail.
Only 3 minutes of your time
If you don’t like the idea of this, let Andrew Turner know.
It’s easy, just go to this site, fill in your name, address, email and the reason why you don’t like the idea of MPs changing the law so you can be spied on.
We put:
“My private communications with friends are personal and should stay that way, not be grabbed by the State and stored for a year. Please respect my privacy and vote against DRIP.”
If that site/link doesn’t work, you could use WriteToThem.
Don’t mind?
Of course, you may be happy with the idea of everything that you do on your mobile, or computer and phone being recorded and kept, in which case, here’s a cute cat video for you:
