Age UK IW launches new Good Neighbour Scheme

Thank to Mark for sharing news of another Good Neighbour Scheme set up on the Isle of Wight. Ed

After an Induction Course carried out by Good Neighbour Scheme staff in the village, the Thorley Good Neighbour Scheme was declared officially open for business.

Helping older Island residents
The scheme is designed to help older Island residents retain independence in their own homes through volunteer support, with things such as shopping and befriending.

There are currently 26 schemes operating across the Island using over 400 volunteers who support over 450 older Island residents who have no one else to turn to.

Demand for Good Neighbour Scheme continues to grow
Good Neighbour Scheme manager Mark O’Sullivan said,

“It is very exciting to be able to help set up a scheme in Thorley. Local residents will find that this will add another level of community resilience to village life, particularly during the winter period when thing get really tough for some of our older residents.

“Demand for the Good Neighbour Scheme continues to grow at a fantastic rate. Last year our volunteers provided 36.000 hours of support across the Island.”
