Alan Wells accused of being ‘economical with the truth’ over MP plot denial

A letter leaked to OnTheWight lays bare that the alleged attempt to de-select Andrew Turner as the candidate at the 2015 general election appears to be an open secret within parts of the Isle of Wight Conservative Association (IWCA). This conflicts strongly with quotes by David Pugh and Alan Wells printed in a recent County Press report.

Wells to CP: “no discussion about removing him”
The week following OnTheWight breaking the story two weeks ago of the attempt to de-select Andrew Turner, the County Press ran an article which included quotes from IWCA Chair Alan Wells saying, “Andrew is the MP and there has been no discussion about removing him. All this nonsense about a cabal is, to my knowledge, completely untrue,” David Pugh was quoted as saying, “I simply cannot understand where this has all come from”.

(Neither David Pugh and Alan Wells chose to respond to OnTheWight’s request for comment to the original story)

Letter: ‘Appalled’ Wells refuted the truth
On Alan’s denials, the author of the letter – a previous officer of the IWCA, who was not the source of the leak – writes, “I am appalled that you have used your position to publicly refute something that you know is true. In fact, you have been part of, and are still in close contact with a group within the Conservative party on the Island that is actively seeking to de-select Andrew Turner.”

The letter continues, alleging that Alan Wells stated shortly after being elected as IWCA Chair that, “the only reason [he] had taken the post of Chairman was to get rid of Andrew.”

The letter also asserts that ex-IW Council leader David Pugh referred to Andrew Turner as, “a disgrace and needed to go”.

Letter from 12 ex-councillors/candidates about Turner
Around the time of the Local elections, the leaked letter claims that Alan Wells had received a letter from “a group of 12 ex-councillors and candidates that stated that conduct of Andrew Turner and his office raised grave doubts about his future willingness to fulfil our association’s united purpose to secure the election of Conservative candidates.” It later states that David Pugh was one of the signatories of that letter.

OnTheWight contacted Alan Wells and David Pugh a short while before publishing. Neither of them have responded. If they do, we’ll add their comment to the story.

The leaked letter
Embedded below is the letter, anonymised, that OnTheWight received.

Previous response from Andrew Turner
At the time the original OnTheWight article was published, it’s understood that Andrew Turner was out of the county, on a continental ferry and unreachable for his reaction.

The next day, after his return, OnTheWight received the following, previously unpublished by OnTheWight, we place it below in full,

Previously, I have made it clear that I intend to stand again in the 2015 General Election and quite properly I have been asked to write formally to the Chairman of the Isle of Wight Conservative Association to confirm that.  I shall be writing to him this week. The Association can then start the normal process for re-adoption.

I would like to thank all the members of my party and other supporters who have already contacted me to confirm their support since the story about my candidacy first appeared in the media yesterday.  I have been very touched by their kind words.

In the meantime I will be getting on with helping my constituents and representing the largest constituency in the UK – the Isle of Wight – a place I love and am proud to represent. Beyond this statement I will not be making any further public comment at all on this internal process of the Conservative Association or on any of the personalities mentioned in this story.

Hell hath no fury like two old bitter Conservatives. At least Andrew Turner gets out of his ivory tower from time to time unlike these two clowns who are a disgrace to the Conservative Party. This has been open knowledge amongst the Conservatives for sometime and I have heard from several people (ex Cons) that Seeley is being groomed. Why doesn’t someone ask him what his political… Read more »

David Pugh is solely responsible for the Conservatives being voted out of office. His friend and confidant Allan Wells (failed local Councillor) possible sees his continued support for Pugh as payback? Unless the Conservatives wake up and sack Allan Wells and 12 of his cronies they will be a spent force on the Island. The Independents could put up their own candidate which will challenge AT and… Read more »

Another scoop from OTW, well done. Without your digging and follow up by readers this would never have seen the light of day.
Anyone care to bet against the Isle of Wight County Press Release tomorrow carrying a sympathetic statement from Andrew Turner’s office?
And no prizes for guessing who will have written it!

Wells and Pugh are history and hopefully Turner will be joining them due to peoples disgust at his support of blood sports.

…….and/or health service privatisation; &/or etc……

And if David Pugh referred to Andrew Turner as, “a disgrace and needed to go”, might he have been inspired by something seen in his mirror?

But there’s no reflection.

It is interesting to observe ICWA public statements on this farrago of political resentment. The Chairman recently complained about ICWA dirty linen being washed in public (implying there might well be some. Now today, a letter from the ICWA Deputy Chair political in today’s CP causes me a wry smile. He states “There is no plan to unilaterally deselect Andrew Turner as the Conservative candidate by any… Read more »

Astonishing behaviour .Does anyone understand Hook’s letter ? Its gibberish . I should think CCHQ are appalled by the possibility of having to parachute in another candidate because whatever else they may think ,they will know that the best way to win the seat is to rally behind the popular standing MP . Cant be long before someone has a word in several people’s ears telling them… Read more »

I was delighted to come across this, as previously I had made some comments on the newspaper website where I got into “conversation” with Mr Mazillius about the very same issue. He did not seem to want to answer my question with regards to who (between Mr Whitehouse and Mr Wells) should be regarded as a lier in this matter; it seems, however, that this is now… Read more »

He performs duties in relation to public representation and elections within the party are overseen by a public body. The chairman/ceo of a trade union (effectively a membership organisation) would be subject to the same offence; equally limited research on the matter finds that the offence, and the definition of public office is a subjective issue. Therefore, my arguement that his actions MAY fall within the remit… Read more »

“Misconduct in public office” is a Common Law offence and thus dependent on case law, i.e. there is no statutory definition. It can be applied to “Officers of authorities and authorities themselves, whether Police or a Local Council are bound by the law to a code of conduct in applying, enforcing or setting out restrictions within their areas.” So, perhaps you can point me at cases where… Read more »

If I could just extend your quote from the Law Commission, you may find the situation less than clear cut, also the guidance on the CPS website is equally vague, “Misconduct in public office is a common law offence but there is no exhaustive definition.” I reiterate my use of the word “may”. However, whether he is or is not deemed to be the holder of a… Read more »

Plotting to remove a sitting MP – provided of course that you’re planning on doing it by democratic means – is no kind of infringement of the conduct required by elected officials, always assuming that’s what Alan Wells is actually doing. Mr Wells is not a county councillor any more, I think – so he doesn’t hold a public office anyway in the sense that would be… Read more »

My reasons are not that Mr Turner may be in line for deselection, but that he has been caught out in an apparent lie in the public domain.

After a very friendly chat with a good friend who knows many within the local association, I am pleased to announce that some of the members whose signatures appeared on the alleged letter include:

David Pugh
Eddie Giles
David Williams
Gary Taylor

Who was the author of the letter

You don’t mean Turner has been caught out in a lie – but your point reads like that. You mean, presumably, that Alan Wells has been caught out in a lie – I don’t know if that’s the case or not, but it wouldn’t surprise me if, trying to protect the reputation of the Conservative Party AND wanting to see the back of Andrew, he had been… Read more »

In the rush to take sides I believe we are all missing the point. What matters come 2015 is that we have an MP that fights for the Island tooth and nail. An MP that works with the current council to ensure we get investment and jobs and protection for all our vulnerable inhabitants. If he or she happens to be Tory, Independent, or Liberal I don’t… Read more »

what an appalling example these individuals are setting. Democracy is the most valuable human possession. Misconduct in public office is a catch all offence which may not apply in these circumstances, but how sordid and degrading can you get? David Pugh and Alan Wells were rejected by the electorate who are not stupid even if these gentlemen think they are. The thought of David Pugh as our… Read more »

I never have actually voted for Andrew Turner – because I would never vote for a Conservative; it’s not the man, it’s the company he’s obliged to keep. You’re a bit hard on him, in my humble one: his horror at the direction the Council was taking was always very apparent to anyone who ever actually spoke to him, or read between the lines, or observed his… Read more »

I agree with most of that. Turner should definitely have been more outspoken publicly even if he did end up at war with the tory group on the island. One thing I cannot agree is that I think Turner has let the island down. He hasnt. @Don Smith “Time we stopped worrying about party politics – What is best for islanders, forget those multimillionaires at Westminster?” Perhaps a little naive? Major local political parties are-to some extent- funded and managed by the central parties in Westminster with leading local activists hoping for recognition centrally. This is why IMHO in local government we need representatives independent (with both capital and little initial letters!) of… Read more »

Simple fix…… In the near future AT is (bizarrely) deselected – all he needs to do is stand as an independent – and take my word for it, this is a scenario which is causing some real brow sweat amongst the tory high command. Pugh as an MP, not a chance of getting elected David….. Stick to doing your Basil Fawlty impression in the hotel trade

Yes, good thinking. As long as he can afford to keep his office going without party backup…. a man who claimed £30 for electric might have a problem with that though! As long as he had kept his dignity I think he would walk it. People would welcome another chance to vote against the conspirators.
