Another seasonal drop in number of Isle of Wight residents seeking out of work benefits and Universal Credit

Figures published by the Office for National Statistics show that 2,855 people in the Isle of Wight area were claiming ‘out of work benefits’ (wording defined by ONS) during May 2022 – these figures also include Universal Credit figures.

That’s a fall of 290 since April 2022, when there were 3,145 claimants, and a fall of 1,920 from May 2021 (4,775 JSA claimants).

Breakdown of claimants
Of those claiming in May 2022:

  • 1,665 were male
  • 1,190 were female
  • 5 were 16-17
  • 420 were aged 18 To 24
  • (235 were aged 18 To 21)
  • 1,630 were aged 25 To 49
  • 800 were aged 50+

That means 3.6% of the resident population of area aged 16-64 is claiming out of work benefits – 0.6% more than the rest of the South East (3.0%), and 0.3% less than the whole of the UK (3.9%).
