Art competition launched to commission new town map

Many thanks to the East Cowes Town Signage Project Committee for details of this new competition. Ed

East Cowes is staking its claim as a tourist destination in its own right in order to encourage those travelling on the Red Funnel car ferry to stop on their way through.

As part of a bigger community town signage project members from the Town Council, East Cowes Business Association, East Cowes Community Partnership, Heritage Centre and County Councillor have launched a competition inviting local artists (of any ability) to design a map of the town centre highlighting the many places of interest in and around East Cowes.

What to include
Places of interest to show (or indicate the direction to) will include the Esplanade, local churches, marina, Osborne House and the Frank James Hospital.

The rules of the competition are:

  • Artists must live in East Cowes or Whippingham
  • The map must be of the town centre – Adelaide Grove to the Medina river
  • The map must be an original piece of artwork
  • The map must be on an A3 sheet of paper
  • Submissions must be received by the 5th October

Completed maps can be handed in to East Cowes Library, Kathy’s Gift Shop, Valu-4-U or Flix Hair.

Town exhibition
On Saturday 12th October, 10am – 6pm, the Heritage Centre is hosting an exhibition on “The town in various maps and plans since 1743”.

The display will include maps, estate plans, JSW Shipyard plans, and house building plans of the town from their extensive collection. Plus the new maps – giving an interesting perspective of old and new.

Public vote and cash prize
Everyone is invited to the event and help judge the maps between 10am and 1.30pm. At 1.45pm the winner will be announced and receive a cash prize.

A representative from The East Cowes Business Association:

“The East Cowes Business Association is fully committed in supporting the community signage project. We feel that the upgrade of signage in Prominent positions around the town will not only be of a benefit to our members by promoting the local independent shops and businesses, it will ultimately help to keep the heart of our community moving forward into a bright new future for East Cowes.”

Cllr Luisa Hillard:

“This is a very exciting time for East Cowes. The Town Map Competition was conceived to boost local tourism and support our independent shops as we are the main gateway to the Island and we need to make sure that our town takes full advantage of that as we make a clear statement about who we are and where we’re going!”
