Independent Labour councillor for Pan and Barton, Geoff Brodie, shares his take on the school place plans. Ed
Many residents (particularly parents of school age children) will have read about the IW Council leadership’s proposals to close six primary schools next summer due to falling pupil numbers.
There are over 2,000 unfilled places in Island primary schools (the equivalent of 10 one-form entry schools), which is leading to a major funding problem as the government funds schools based on pupil numbers.
Knock-on effect
Our local school, Barton, isn’t one of those proposed for closure. None are in Newport. However, Godshill Primary is slated for closure next summer. Barton has been in an informal federation for more than six years now, with Mark Snow as Headteacher of both schools.
Closure of Godshill will have a detrimental effect on Barton finances as there are many shared resources and staff:
- Both schools share various staffing including headteacher, other senior staff, teachers and administrative staff
- This structure has enabled both schools to plan and share school improvement, training and resources
- Barton will have to completely restructure – a school in the most deprived ward on the Island (not everyone of course) with many children with exceptional needs.
- Barton retained its ‘Good’ OFSTED judgement in all areas (Sept 2024)
- It will have to significantly downsize to facilitate the loss of Godshill connections
- Reducing the ability to share resources, trips and experiences and professional development opportunities.
- It will have a significant impact on the school budget.
Reason to oppose to Godshill closing
Whilst I realise that some schools will have to close, I entirely oppose the closure of Godshill due to the negative effect it will have on Barton.
I will argue for that at County Hall throughout the decision-making process.
Cabinet decision
Sadly the decision will be taken by just eight of the 39 members of the Council – “the Cabinet” – as the leadership know they will not get Godshill through Full Council. (Interestingly, the Cabinet form of Council government will be abolished next May thanks to efforts that I led throughout the early part of this year).
So if you have a moment and share my concern – or indeed oppose it! – please email the Cabinet members at [email protected] before next Thursday evening.
