A highly successful road safety course run by the Isle of Wight Council for Island bikers is to return this September.
Better Riding is a short course designed to improve riders’ skills, help them identify and anticipate hazards on the road and teach riders how to react to them using the methods of riding practiced by police experts.
Course starts 1st September
The course, which runs over three consecutive weeks, starts on Thursday 1 September 2011 from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.
Better Riding is open to anyone with a full motorcycle license and costs just £15 per person.
Six hours of theory
The course, which is based on the Police Riders Handbook, provides those taking part with six hours of theory covering systems of control, observation, cornering, overtaking.
The final theory session includes a basic first aid talk from a medical professional who will explain what to do if you are the first on the scene of an accident as well as a talk from a professional advanced rider.
Practical assessment too
Following the theory classes a practical assessment ride conducted by highly advanced motorcyclists is arranged for each rider on a one-to-one basis at a mutually convenient time.
Cllr Barry Abraham, Isle of Wight Council Cabinet Member for Fire, Culture and Residents’ Services, said: “This course forms part of the council’s work to make our roads safer. It is a great opportunity for people new to riding or those in need of a refresher course to learn about the fundamentals of being safer on the road. This course is highly recommended as unfortunately, often through no fault of their own, bikers form a disproportionately high percentage of the UK’s serious road traffic incidents.”
