Once Penny Mordaunt was eliminated in the penultimate round of voting among Conservative MPs for the position of leader of the Party, the question on many people’s lips was who will Isle of Wight Conservative MP, Bob Seely, support – Rishi Sunak or Liz Truss?
Today (Monday) Seely has declared his support for the latter, Liz Truss.
He said,
“I’ve been asked if I am supporting any other candidate now that Penny Mordaunt has gone out. Penny was a great candidate, and I was sorry to see her leave the contest.
“I will be voting for Liz Truss in the final two.”
Will there be more promises of an Island Deal?
As has been well-reported, during the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election campaign Boris Johnson promised a better deal for the Island.
Back in 2018, research carried out by Portsmouth University found that because we live on an Island, providing services costs the Isle of Wight council £6.4m more than other local authorities.
Nearly three years later and the so-called Island Deal has not been forthcoming.
Seely: “I believe that Liz will be the candidate”
Mr Seely continued,
“We now need to grow the economy whilst dealing with inflation and the cost of living problems facing families. We need to help get more people back in work and focus on NHS waiting lists.
“Abroad, we need to be more proactive in dealing with threats to our freedom and way of life from rising authoritarian states such as Russia and China.
“I believe that Liz will be the candidate best able to deal with those issues.
“Regardless of whoever becomes leader, I will continue to help secure a better deal for the Isle of Wight.”
