The artwork in the centre of Coppins Bridge roundabout in Newport will be changing its appearance on Friday 17 March.
‘Mimic’, which is a bio-mechanical plant that was made by students at Clatterford Tuition Centre using recyclable materials, will ‘flower’ in time for the start of spring.
This will see each of the eight pods that light up in the evening opened and flowers added.
Using recycled items
Juliet Lainson, art coordinator at Clatterford said “The sculpture is called ‘Mimic’ because it mimics a real life plant. With the onset of spring, the artwork will now flower, just like a real life plant.
“We’ve had 11 new students at Clatterford build each flower using plastic baking trays and other recycled items. This way the new students can also get involved in the project and we are looking forward to seeing the artwork change this week.”
The artwork will ‘flower’ at 11am on 17 March and each of the new flower heads has 40 separate components.
Isle of Wight artist Glenn Martin worked with students to design and build ‘Mimic’ during 2011 and it was first installed on Coppins Bridge in July last year.
It uses a variety of recycled materials including washing machine parts and plastic tubing.
