Council seeks family input to improve Local Offer for SEND support

The Isle of Wight council say they are working to improve how families access information about support services for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

The Local Offer is a key online tool that sets out what education, health and social care services are available for SEND children and their families on the Island.

Focusing on a single, improved platform
The Children and Families Act 2014 requires local authorities to ensure that the Local Offer is clear, comprehensive and easy to navigate.

To meet that obligation, the council has removed an outdated page and is now concentrating on improving the IW Family Information Hub’s Local Offer section.

The council wants to make the site easier for families to use and is inviting parents and carers to take part in an online survey to share their experiences and ideas.

Collaboration with families at the centre
Once a new Parent Carer Forum is up and running, the council say they plan to work in partnership with that group and other local parent/carer organisations to shape the future of the Local Offer.

Naomi Carter, service director for education, inclusion and access, said,

“By focusing on a single, improved platform, we are making it much easier for families to access the information and support they need.

“This collaborative approach ensures that the Local Offer will be shaped by the very people it is designed to help.

“Their first-hand experiences and insights are invaluable in creating a resource that truly meets the needs of our community. We are excited to see the positive impact this will have on the lives of SEND children and their families.”

How to take part
The council is encouraging families to complete the survey and help influence the next stage of improvements.

Feedback gathered will directly inform how the Local Offer is structured and presented in the future.

You can access the survey on the council’s website or email: ImprovingSEND@iow.gov.uk.
