Cowes Concert Band ConductorAn Isle of Wight brass band is appealing for past members to help them celebrate a special anniversary concert.

Cowes Concert Band is marking its 60th year with a concert at Trinity Theatre, Cowes, on Sunday 8th May and hopes the audience will include many former players.

Past players welcome
Current musical director Andy Norman said, “We are trying to spread the word far and wide to past players – it would be great if there were lots of old friends of ours in the audience to help celebrate our special year.

“We know the whereabouts of many former players and will be contacting them about the concert but we know there are many others across the Island and want to extend the invitation to them.”

The band was formed in 1951 by cornet player Lewis Bircham and made its first public appearance during the Cowes Week sailing regatta of 1952. In its early years the band was a regular sight at launching ceremonies held at the town’s J S White’s shipyard.

In recent years the band has enjoyed a resurgence and boasts 27 players including several teenagers and in 2008 a grant from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation funded a new set of uniform jackets.

The celebratory concert starts at 3pm and admission is £5. Under-16s accompanied by an adult are free.
