Friday 6 July marks National Road Safety Day and members of the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service’s road safety team will be exhibiting at two supermarkets.
The team will be at Morrisons in Newport from 9am until 12:30pm and then at Tesco in Ryde from 1:30pm until 4:30pm.
Only a fool breaks the two second rule
Officers will give advice and guidance on road safety to visitors and also promote the national ‘only a fool breaks the two second rule’ message which relates to the recommended distance drivers should keep between cars on the roads.
There will also be interactive elements including a multiple-choice computer based on road safety and a task where visitors can guess how long a certain stopping distance is. There will also be a fire appliance at each supermarket for people to view.
Although figures are reducing, there are still an average of five deaths and 65 serious injuries on UK roads every day.
National Road Safety Day is organised by the Chief Fire Officers’ Association.
