Major Tony Smallwood and Richard Harwood

Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra: Elgar with a touch of fairy dust

Thanks to Tim for the Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra for details of the upcoming concert. Ed

Saturday 23rd January will see the Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra give their latest concert at the Medina Theatre. This concert will be conducted by two guest conductors.

The first part of the concert will be conducted by local teacher and regular first trumpet with the Orchestra, Gareth Balch.

The second part of the concert will be conducted by another local musician, Major Tony Smallwood (rtd Royal Marines), who is well known to Island audiences with his visits with various Royal Marine bands.

Farnham Festival Overture
The concert will open with Richard Rodney Bennett’s Farnham Festival Overture. Written in 1964 this short overture (written for the Farnham Festival) is very tuneful and is a fine example of what we call “Light Music”.

Following this opening, Gareth Balch will then conduct his second piece this being the famous Nocturne from the incidental music to a Midsummer Night’s Dream by Mendelssohn.

Elgar’s Cello Concerto
To end the first half Tony Smallwood will take up the baton and the orchestra will be joined by the cellist Richard Harwood for a performance of Elgar’s ever popular Cello Concerto. Richard Harwood is much in demand both as a soloist and a chamber musician so the orchestra are very pleased to have secured his services.

Melodic Dvorak
Following the interval the orchestra will perform the melodic 6th Symphony by Dvorak.
