As we all know, no party at the election last week gained a majority, so the media is in a frenzy discussing each and every turn – real and imagined – until we’re all told what has been decided what is best for us and who will govern us.
You might have heard that at the weekend, hundreds of people went along to show their support (video) for the idea of reforming the voting system in the UK to allow each vote to have the same value, not matter where it is cast in the UK.
Island votes “count for less”
On the Isle of Wight, we have the largest number of voters in a single area – 109,042 vs 68,433 in the average area constituency – so the VoterPower Website calculates that each of our votes effectively counts for less.
They rank the Island as 447 out of 650 constituencies in their Voter Power Index. By their calculations, the average Mainland voter has 3.33 time more voting power than each of us Isle of Wight voters.
Simple online petition
Take Back Parliament isn’t tied to a particular political party, but a collection of different groups – including the Electoral Reform Society – who say that “This Parliament does not represent us. We demand fair votes now. There must never again be an election under this broken system.”
So far over 42,000 people in the UK have signed up online. Signing up is easy – just enter your email address and postcode into the Take Back Parliament site.
