Fancy Being Co-opted On To Ventnor Town Council?

Fancy Being Co-opted On To Ventnor Town Council? Those who’ve read the report from Monday night’s VTC meeting will know that not enough people requested an election for the Ventnor East vacancy, therefore the council must co-opt someone to fill the vacancy.

If you wish to be considered to serve as a Town Councillor all you need to do is let the Town Clerk know in writing by 5pm on Friday 2 July 2010.

Then, on Monday 12th July, prospective candidates will be invited to make a short presentation to the Town Council on how they can contribute to the Town Council and the community of Ventnor.

Criteria for co-option
A local councillor must be 18 years of age or over and a British subject or qualifying Commonwealth citizen, a citizen of the Republic of Ireland or a citizen of another Member State of the European Community.

He or she must also fulfil at least one of the following criteria:

  • 1) During the whole of the 12 months before nomination occupied land or premises as owner or tenant in the parish area, or,
  • 2) During the same period resided in the Parish, or within 4.8km thereof, or
  • 3) During the same period had her/his principal or only place of work in that Parish, or
  • 4) At the time of nomination be registered as a local government elector for the administrative area of the Parish.

The person should not be disqualified from being elected by reason of any disqualification set out in Section 80 of the Local Government Act 1972, or any decision made under section 79 of the Local Government Act 2000.

Sally, That is an excellent and comprehensive list of questions, However, there is a typographical error in Question 4. Should it read; 4. What answer did you receive from Q 3?

Oh Island..

Here we go, as soon as I read it had been reported to the police I immediately thought the council will have to hold an internal investigation (so that they can lose all incriminating documentation). It is what they did with the Highpoint Rendel scandal, two people were even caught stealing paperwork. Par for the course.

Meanwhile, as I understand it, a person who altered a document to ensure children were removed from a family, and tried to cover it up, is now overseeing Island Social Workers.. The mind boggles! Will this action become commonplace here now? If so, anyone hoping for help from childrens services will rightly be getting worried!
