The meeting – at the George Street Centre, Ryde between 3pm and 7pm – brings together the various organisations responsible for water management in Ryde, including the Environment Agency, Southern Water and Island Roads, as well as the council as flood authority.
The event follows the recent Ryde Flood Investigation Report and gives the opportunity to comment on the report and to discuss issues of flood risk in the town and options to alleviate the problems.
A Ryde Surface Water Management Plan is currently being prepared and the public event will contribute towards this.
Isle of Wight Council Executive member for public protection, Councillor Phil Jordan, said:
“As lead local flood authority the council is currently undertaking flood investigations across the Island – and these have identified the need for a more detailed flood risk management investigation in Ryde.”
Ryde has a history of river flooding, surface water flooding and sewer flooding from an overload of the combined drainage system, which can be exacerbated by tide locking of outfalls.
Councillor Jordan added:
“The council is leading the preparation of the surface water management plan for Ryde – which takes the form of a partnership approach to flooding issues and the need for all interested bodies and parties to share knowledge, resources and collectively decide on options to alleviate the problems.”
The new plan will also be shaped by computer modelling of flood risk in locations including Monktonmead Brook and Binstead.
It is hoped the new plan will be finalised during early 2015.
