Four Island churches added to English Heritage ‘At Risk’ register

Today English Heritage (EH) have added five new buildings to their ‘At Risk’ register, bringing the total to twenty-one sites across the Isle of Wight.

Four of the five are churches, with the fifth being Bouldnor Battery, Shalfleet.

The condition of the Church of St Mary, Cowes is stated as ‘very bad’, the highest category, with the remaining listed as the second highest, ‘poor’.

Highest priority
The mainly 14th century Church of All Saints, Godshill has been given the highest priority for attention – A – which EH define as of “Immediate risk of further rapid deterioration or loss of fabric; no solution agreed”.

English Heritage pick out, “Structural cracking to south west corner, internal staining from leaks to central valley gutter and defective rainwater goods including, crucially, the gutter above the wall painting.”
