Free lecture series explores sustainable living and urban design on the Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight branch of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA IW) has announced its upcoming Autumn Lecture Series, which promises to be an exciting line-up of thought-provoking talks. These lectures will take place at Quay Arts, located on Sea Street in Newport, with networking from 6.30pm and talks commencing at 7pm.

This series is free to attend and is open to all professionals and interested parties. It offers a unique opportunity for the community to engage with important discussions about architecture, urban design, and sustainability.

Exploring the garden village concept
The series kicks off on Wednesday, 25th September, with a lecture by Stride Treglown titled “The Garden Village Revisited.” George Cadbury’s Garden Village concept, which aimed to promote a healthy and sustainable lifestyle, will be examined for its continued relevance today.

Ian Tipton, Director with Stride Treglown Architects, will take the audience through the evolution of the garden village movement, drawing connections from historical examples such as Bournville to Welwyn and discussing its application in modern new towns. He will also explore the concept’s potential value for the Isle of Wight, particularly as a UNESCO Biosphere.

Addressing coastal challenges
On Wednesday, 23rd October, the lecture titled “Portsmouth Sea Defences” will be presented by LDA Design. This talk will address the pressing issue of flood defence, specifically focusing on Portsmouth’s Southeast sea front. The project represents a significant £136 million investment aimed at protecting the area from flooding while enhancing public spaces.

Kirsty Barker, Associate responsible for the project, will explain the comprehensive overhaul of the sea defences and promenade. Her discussion will highlight the challenges and innovative solutions employed in this extensive project, emphasising the balance between functional design and public enjoyment.

The power of rewilding
The final talk of the series, “Rewilding the Isle of Wight,” will take place on Wednesday, 20th November. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust (HIWWT) will present this lecture, focusing on the island’s biodiversity and the importance of natural conservation.
