Tann: We call on the new government and local MPs to take notice
Debbie Tann MBE, Chief Executive of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, said,
“Nature protection and recovery is not the enemy of economic growth and prosperity in our region; it is essential to it.
“Today, we proudly launch the Trust’s Business Pledge, signed by leading local businesses and corporate partners, clearly illustrating the business community’s support for doing the right thing and recognising nature’s crucial role in underpinning and delivering economic growth and a more sustainable economy.
“We call on the new government and local MPs to take notice, and we look forward to engaging with them further on delivering the positive solutions needed.”
The Business Pledge
The Trust’s Business Pledge is a critical statement of support, outlining the necessary actions to foster sustainable growth and protect our natural environment. It aims not only to support the alignment of business partners with the Trust’s mission, but also to encourage supportive action from the new government and local decision-makers.
This engagement is crucial, for creating a policy environment that fully supports and empowers businesses committed to doing the right thing, as well as delivering on the considerable economic opportunities directly connected to restoring our natural environment.
Key elements of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust Business Pledge:
- Recognition of the link between nature protection and economic resilience:
- Acknowledging the significant risks posed by the climate and nature crises, which could lead to a 12% GDP reduction by the 2030s, the pledge calls for urgent action to invest in nature. This investment is crucial not only for community health but also for the opportunities it presents for a greener economy.
- Support for a nature recovery network:
- Advocating for an ambitious and consistent legal and policy framework, the pledge promotes the creation of a nature recovery network and the integration of environmental considerations into planning processes. This framework is vital for actively managing land and development for nature’s recovery, by creating simple but effective rules to allow the environment to be properly integrated, enhanced and considered up front in planning.
- Advocacy for nature-based solutions:
- Emphasising the role of healthy habitats in carbon storage and climate resilience, the pledge highlights the importance of long-term investment in nature-based solutions. These solutions are vital for local resilience against climate-related challenges, such as flooding and extreme weather events.
- Commitment to clean water protection:
- With a focus on reducing pollution and restoring habitats, the pledge supports stronger protections for rivers and seas, properly resourced regulation and enforcement measures, and greater investment in water quality. Clean water sources are vital for the environment, public health and the economy.
