‘Have I Got Snooze For You’ April’s Cafe Scientifique Talk

If you’ve ever had problems sleeping or have had to share a bed with someone who does, tomorrow’s Cafe Scientifique talk should be of interest.

Sleeping gypsy:Dr Peter Oliver will be heading down from the Medical Research Council in Oxford on Monday night and giving a talk about sleep, entitled, “Have I got snooze for you” (we love the title Peter).

It should be an fascinating and entertaining talk, as Peter looks at aspects of sleep you may not have thought about.

Why do flamingos sleep on one leg?
From the struggle to get up on a Monday morning to coping with jet-lag, the body has to carefully balance our need to be alert or to be at rest. But how does the brain control this? How much sleep do we really need? And why do flamingos sleep on one leg? Come along and find out.

Peter has worked in genetics research for 15 years and is interested in the way the genes and the environment influence sleep, particularly in human disease.

The talk will cover some of the facts and myths surrounding sleep and the role of genetics in the control of circadian rhythms – if you can stay awake, of course.

It takes place at the new venue of the Regency Room at the Shanklin Conservative Club and entry is just £3 per person. What a bargain!
