Having A Laugh At Isle of Arts

Next week’s Isle of Arts Festival features music, film, art, literature, workshops and comedy. As well as Rich Hall opening the festival this coming Friday night, comedy will close the Festival on Sunday. If Barry Norman doesn’t rock your boat, why not head to the Boathouse. Ed

Robin BucklandTake four comedians carving out a name for themselves on the circuit; add in Ventnor’s own Radio 4 comedy writer Hannah George as master of ceremonies and youʼve got an evening of witty, poignant and downright funny stand-up.

Live @ the Boathouse (Spyglass Inn) from 7pm on Sunday 17 April will feature loveable scruffbag Robin Buckland, who is 25 going on 45 and always struggling – and failing – with what most of us see as the easy stuff in life. His self-deprecating, wry take on the world has won him plaudits from the comedy pundits and took him to the finals of the So You Think Youʼre Funny Competition in 2009.

Romesh Ranganathan is a master of ultra sardonic and dry one-liners. He burst onto the comedy scene last year and is now gigging regularly at Brighton’s Komedia and taking venues round the country by storm. In between gigs heʼs reached the finals of So You Think You’re Funny 2010, Latitude New Act Final 2010 and come runner up in the Amused Moose Laugh Off 2010.

You’d think that farmer by day and funny man by night would be a contradiction in terms given one requires early mornings and the other late nights, but Rob Dumbrell manages to pull off this unlikely combo with aplomb and wit. And to compete the line-up, Rich Perry‘s first career as a chef has provided with a rich seam of humour and, as a south coast lad, he’s got some cheerful gags to squash people’s preconceptions about coming from Brighton.

MC Hannah George graduated from Southampton Solent eighteen months ago with a degree in Comedy Writing, but in that short time she has shot to some top scribbling slots, writing gags for Sandi Toksvig on Radio 4’s The News Quiz and also writing for The Now Show (another Radio 4 show) and also for children’s TV. She has also devised a couple of games shows that have been taken up by production companies, so we can expect to hear much more from Hannah in the future.

Join us at the Boathouse with the some of best new comics around and finish your festival weekend on a high.
