Hoegh Osaka

Hoegh Osaka taking in water due to slight crack in hull

An update from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) on the situation with the grounded cargo ship, the Hoegh Osaka, was given to press yesterday (Tuesday)

It was reported that the cargo on the ship, around 1,400 cars and about 70 pieces of construction equipment, mostly remains in position. However, plant has moved on one deck and unfortunately caused a slight crack in the hull.

This has resulted in water being taken on board.

According to the MCA this “was rapidly dealt with when discovered by the salvors and there is no evidence of pollution”. Later in the day, it was discovered that more water had entered the vessel than previously thought.

Plans to refloat today abandoned
Last night it was also announced that plans to attempt to refloat the Hoegh Osaka this morning had been abandoned.

The alternative option of securing the Hoegh Osaka will be followed and preparations for the re-float will continue when the weather allows.
