Immaterials: Light Painting WiFi Project (video)

We love hearing about innovative and fascinating creative projects and this tip-off from VB reader, Thomas Cowley hit the spot.

Timo Arnall's light-painting imagesImmaterials is a nearfield communication project taking place in Norway by Timo Arnall, Jørn Knutsen and Einar Sneve Martinussen that ‘explores the invisible terrain of WiFi networks in urban spaces by light painting signal strength in long-exposure photographs’.

As you’ll see from the video footage below, one person walks along the street with a measuring rod that has 80 points of light on it which respond to the Received Signal Strength (RSSI) of a particular WiFi network.

Long-exposure captures WiFi networks
Through the use of long-exposure photography, the team were then able to create the amazing images shown on the video with the ‘light-painting’ revealing cross-sections of WiFi networks through the city.

It’s a very cool idea and looks utterly stunning.

We’d highly recommend watching the video in full screen mode.
