Island Conservatives announce 40 candidates for local election

The Island Conservatives have today (22 March) announced they have a “full set of candidates for the May 2013 local elections to the Isle of Wight Council”.

The 40 candidates include 17 current councillors and 23 new candidates.

The announcement on the Island Conservatives Website states, “Conservative councillors have a strong track record of listening to the concerns of local residents, rolling their sleeves up and getting things done. Many are involved in local initiatives and parish council activity, as well as serving on school governing bodies and other local organisations. The group of Conservative councillors work together as a team to make the right decisions for the Island’s future, and give the local authority a clear direction.”

Interesting the choice for Newport East is the old Councillor for Chale, Niton & Whitwell, who resigned in 2010 due to work commitments.

Also, why is Roger Dixcey standing for Newport South AND Parkhurst?!

Very unlikely that he will win anyway as Newport East is about the only place on the island which is a traditional labour ward.

David Pugh has just been in touch to confirm that Cllr Richard Hollis will be standing in Parkhurst, not Cllr Dixcey. It was an error in their announcement.

Pardon? ‘Listening to the concerns of local residents’. Someone is having a laugh.Typical Pugh arrogance. This will be the first year I will NOT be voting Conservative. Once again the out of touch Tories in Cowes select candidates with yachtie connections. What happened to grass roots candidates like Cllr Peacey-Wilcox? Perhaps she saw the light. In the county press today, geoff lumley said there were over 20 candidates confirmed. Does anyone know about these, all i know is kevin barclay jay in sandown north.

I had my local conservative councillor turn up on my door step a couple of days ago. I asked him about the PFI. He said to me the council failed to communicate exactly what it’s about. And Tidal Power comments from a standing a councillor makes you wonder if they have been asleep for 8 years or just drifting??

Labour haven’t done themselves any favours, where have they been the last few years? They should have been out there raising their profile and cashing in on the discontent! I’m afraid they will spend a few more years in the wilderness yet. At least we have a few very good Independent candidates. Paul Fuller springs to mind. I’m not a labour supporter but I expect they may pick up a couple of wards like Lake North and Ryde South where they have done quite well in past elections and by elections as well as holding Newport East.
