Island Pupils Bury Time Capsule

A time capsule showcasing life in 2010 has been buried in the new town square in East Cowes.

On Tuesday (2 November), pupils from St Catherine’s School in Ventnor made their way up to the site of the new town square.

Pupils have been working with Wates Retail, the company working on the new Waitrose store, to assemble a time capsule.

The 12 litre capacity ‘Millennium 150’ capsule was buried under a slab close to the listed stone wall in the centre of the square.

We understand that some of the items include a newspaper, pictures of East Cowes, letters and poems by the pupils, a DVD, sample schoolwork, a class photo, coins and even predictions for the future.

John Mash, Project Manager for Wates said, “It’s a great opportunity to leave future generations an insight into our lives.”

Helen Freeston, Head of Further Education at St Catherine’s said, “The pupils have really enjoyed working on this project, making predictions of what life will be like in the future and writing letters for the finders of the time capsule. We would like to thank Wates for this opportunity.”
