Following her work experience with On The Wight in the summer, journalism student Rosie Saban, returns for our 2012 recap. Ed

Racing round the year to July, we kicked off with a different style of race in the form of the 81st Round the Island Race. The popular event, which is the biggest yacht race in the world, saw a total of 1,647 boats take part across 25 classes.

Litter louts watch out, Patricia Almond is about! The Isle of Wight litter campaigner was awarded the Marsh Christian Trust Award by the Campaign to Protect Rural England president for her work in maintaining a beautiful and litter-free countryside.

Evacuating 40s style
Stepping back in time, Isle of Wight children took part in a 1940s style evacuation as they learnt about World War Two at Havenstreet Railway Station. The event, put on by the IW Heritage Service, saw children sampling food including: fish paste, carrot spread, and egg-less cake.

12-year-old India Dixcey-Parsons proves she is a cut above the rest as she has her lovely long hair cut off for charity Little Princess Trust which makes wigs for children that have lost their hair due to treatment for cancer.

Torch relay
The Olympic torch hits the Isle of Wight coast and makes its journey in the hands of chosen Islanders.

It’s not a sight you see every day when you go to the course to hit a few holes. A seal pup, estimated at less than a week old, was found on a golf course at St Helens Duver. The animal was rescued unharmed by the RSPCA before being transferred to a Wildlife Centre in West Sussex until it can be released into the wild.

63 brave swimmers took part in the 2nd annual Wild West Solent Swim, raising a staggering £20,000 for charity with their nippy aquatic endeavours.

Royal visit
Her Majesty rounds up her Jubilee tour with a visit to the Isle of Wight, a favourite royal destination for centuries.

Finally, the month of July offered reports of ‘liquid tarmac’ as the sun wreaked havoc across Island roads.
