Isle of Wight pupils create an impression at first Equality and Rights Advocates Conference

Hayley Conway-Hughes, Assistant Principal, shares this report from Christ the King College. Ed

Christ the King College had the pleasure of hosting the first Equality and Rights Advocates (EARA) conference for Isle of Wight secondary schools this week.

We were joined by staff and student representatives from Cowes Enterprise College, Ryde and Upper Chine School, Medina College, The Bay and Carisbrooke College.

Equality and Rights
The students learned about Equality and Rights with Minnie Moore a Rights, Diversity and Social Justice Education adviser from Hampshire.

They heard feedback from Victoria Paris and Jess Darroll regarding the IOW Public Health student survey 2021.

Amazing advocacy work and initiatives
It was fascinating to find out more about the student experience across the County. We were also fortunate enough to have been joined by student representatives from Brighton Hill School in Basingstoke.

They told us about all of the amazing advocacy work and initiatives they have implemented in their school. You can see their school flags in the photograph, just one of many ways they are raising the profile of diversity and inclusion in their context.

Students spoke passionately
Christ the King College EARA group representatives spoke passionately about their experiences in school and the changes they want to make in order to promote inclusivity.

Daiana Szegedi, Bella McGrory-Patton, Aurora Tout-Walters, Lianne Ponferrada, Emily Kirby and Amy Cox spoke about issues ranging from ableism to racism.

Created an impression
Minnie Moore was so impressed she has asked them to contribute to her own newsletter in the future. It was a fabulous event and we look forward to the next conference in the New Year.

We’re hugely proud of the contribution our students are making to improving the lived experience of young people in education, we hope you are too.
