Back at the end of September 2011 Conservative Communities Secretary Eric Pickles announced an extra £250m funding towards ensuring weekly bin collections across the UK.
Being keen, we got straight onto the story that morning, asking the Isle of Wight council press office if the announcement would have any impact on the council’s plans to change collections on the Island.
After prompting a couple of times since, we received the answer yesterday.
Cllr Pugh: Hope for additional funding
IW Council leader Cllr David Pugh, said: “The latest indication we have from the Government is that this money will be made available to local authorities which maintain a weekly collection for what has been described by Government as ‘smelly waste’.
“We await clarification as to what exactly constitutes ‘smelly waste’, but we hope that the Isle of Wight will be in line to qualify for this additional funding with our new waste collection arrangements.
“The Department for Communities and Local Government has indicated to us that the prospectus for this new funding will be published in the near future. We look forward to receiving it.”
