Here’s some another snippet from the press conference at the Anthony Minghella Movie Marathon.
When asked which was his favourite Mighella film, Jude said that he didn’t really have favourite films at all.
He talked about seeing Truly, Madly, Deeply with his Mum and that it was the first film that he went to and felt that it was OK to “feel really emotional about it.” He loved that it was film that “allowed you to be gushing about your love for someone.”
English Patient
Talking about the English Patient, Jude said that he saw it in Los Angeles, before he’d done much work out there and described feeling a “huge wave of fascination and love for this film,” from the community in LA.
After describing a few scenes, Jude said he was “astounded that people were making films like that. It felt like a film of the past. It had a romance, an intelligence and a scope larger than anything being fussed over in modern cinema.”
“How lucky I was”
Most revealing was his comments on his experience filming with Anthony on The Talented Mr Ripley, “Part of me wishes that someone had told me how lucky I was making the Talented Mr Ripley. At the time I was only 25 and I hadn’t made many films.
“Lying around on the beach, sailing a yacht, drinking wine every night, I just thought, this is great.
“And now I look back and I think, I wish I could make another film like that!”
Thanks again to Mike Furness (part of the soon-to-launch VentnorTV team ) for shooting the video.
