Labour MP highlights opportunities for Isle of Wight communities in devolution plan

Local Government Minister Jim McMahon delivered a statement to the House of Commons on the Government’s English Devolution White Paper (16th December 2024) signalling opportunities ahead for local authorities across the country – including the Isle of Wight.

Devolution will reset the relationship between central and local government giving communities, such as the Isle of Wight, greater ability to help shape their local areas.

Isle of Wight West MP recognises the White Paper (devolution) offers the Island more control over things that matter to them.

Quigley: This is our chance to have a bigger voice in our future
Richard Quigley, Labour MP for Isle of Wight West said,

“My job is to fight for the best deal for the Island.

“We need to be on the front foot in conversations with potential partners in devolution.

“This is our chance to have a bigger voice in our future, lobby for better funding, control of transport, housing, skills and employment support.

“Devolution presents a huge opportunity for Islanders and for our communities to thrive.

“We all want what’s best for the Island. And I’ll continue to work with the council and colleagues in government on this.”

Benefits of Hampshire partnership
The Isle of Wight already has a unitary authority, but that does not stop it being part of a Hampshire devolved area, helping to improve services and build resilience across local government.

The Island currently benefits from the resources and services afforded by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.

Local election delays
Plans for devolution could see some elections, including the Island’s local elections, delayed. This would allow local authorities and council officers the necessary resources to start planning for devolution.

It is not a politically motivated decision, but one of practicality. Elections require considerable resource and time.

The Government is committed to working with local leaders on devolution and delivering the
change that the country voted for.
