Whilst sitting governments make light of losing by-elections, as if it is a minor irritation and the voting public don’t understand how good they’ve got it, they don’t expect to lose this many and by this big a margin.

This week Kingswood in Somerset saw a swing of 16 per cent, overturning an 11,000 majority, whilst Wellingborough saw a 28.5 per cent swing, overturning an 18,500 majority.   With the government whittling away an 80 seat majority to one of 55.

What this means on the Isle of Wight is a 24 per cent swing sees Bob Seely MP lose his seat to Labour.

What is clear, if you don’t vote Tory, Tories don’t win.

A 24 per cent swing away from the Tories would have been unthinkable once upon a time on the Island, but the conversation I am having with life-long Tory voters is that they have been let down by this government, but equally by our beleaguered MP Bob Seely.

As they put it, it’s time for change.
